L-Glutamine is a vital amino acid that provides your body with the functional fuel you need to power your metabolism at every level. In fact, your existence relies so heavily on the actions of glutamine, which makes up more than 60% of free amino acids within the body, that not getting enough can seriously impact your health. Glutamine is derived from both dietary animal and plant proteins, but can also synthesized by our bodies when the need arises. Heavy stresses on our metabolism such as strenuous exercise, infectious diseases, injuries, and other trauma can lead to rapid depletion.1 This can open the door to immune dysfunction, intestinal problems, mental impairment, physical lethargy, and muscle wasting. Glutamine plays such an important role in almost every step of nutrient digestion, absorption, and the resulting energy production that no diet is complete without it. FUNCTIONAL ENERGY: Think of glutamine as a high test gasoline that can help your body achieve it’s maximum horsepower. Your body needs a constant supply of fuel to run, and like automotive fuel, the high octane stuff is the best. Sure, your body can run on fuel that is made with lots of water, sugar, and, synthetic additives, but your performance will not be as strong as it could be. You will tire more quickly, become quickly dehydrated, and impede your mental and physical performance. Glutamine is directly responsible for converting this fuel into glucose, the basic energy your cells need to function. However, when glucose levels drop (hypoglycemia), glutamine stores are then synthesized by the liver into more glucose. If glutamine levels are depleted, the body will start breaking down lean muscle tissue for the amino acids it needs to function. Therefore, ingesting adequate amounts of glutamine through diet and supplementation means that less lean tissue will be broken down to provide this energy. This is especially vital after stressful situations, when glucose and glutamine levels are depleted. For brain power, glutamine is important for the same reason as it provides a functional fuel source for our nervous system. By energizing the neurological impulses to and from the brain, It helps increase our mental clarity, focus, and even our mood. IMPROVED NUTRIENT ABSORPTION: The nutrients derived from the foods you eat will be wasted if the body is unable to absorb and utilize it in a proficient manner. Glutamine provides the main source of energy for this special set of cells that structure the intestinal lining. These specialized cells must quickly divide and replace themselves to support the integrity of this lining... and this requires a lot of fuel. A healthy gastrointestinal tract will allow better lining permeability so ingested nutrients can be absorbed more completely instead of excreted before metabolization. A healthy gastrointestinal tract also allows for a more efficient release of waste products, which can cause illnesses due to toxic buildup. POSITIVE NITROGEN BALANCE: Achieving a positive nitrogen balance indicates that your body has enough protein stores to provide the functional energy to maintain your metabolism. Proteins contain all the amino acids you need to function. Since dietary proteins are the body’s only source of nitrogen (fats and carbohydrates do not), it is important to consume and be able to utilize adequate amounts. Nitrogen is synthesized into these important amino acids, the essential building blocks of all proteins, enzymes, and especially DNA. However, the body cannot synthesize nitrogen on its own and cannot access it from the atmosphere. It must be ingested, and the L-Glutamine you get from your diet or that you supplement contributes over 30% of the nitrogen that is transported to cells.2 However, unlike fats and carbohydrates, nitrogen cannot be stored in the body and therefore must be quickly shuttled to the muscle tissue to be metabolized.3 If the body’s nitrogen levels fall below the balance point, your body is not retaining enough protein. This will lead to the physical and mental problems mentioned earlier in this article. The average person requires about .05g (50mg) of nitrogen per pound of body weight a day to maintain adequate protein stores. (See Table 1)4 WASTE REMOVAL: Because of nitrogen’s rather limited “shelf life” in the body, the amount that is not used to produce energy and converted to ammonia (a metabolic waste product) and must be eliminated to prevent toxic buildup. In fact, studies indicated that the efficiency of nitrogen utilization for retention has been found to be only about 50% in healthy adults.5 L-Glutamine acts as a nitrogen transport and is able to recycle excess ammonia into other amino acids, nucleotides (structural units of RNA, DNA), and its conversion to urea for excretion through the kidneys. It can also be expelled from the body through sweat.6 Toxic buildup can attribute to severe neurodegenerative diseases, the rapid formation of nitrogen-based free radicals, and lethargy to name a few. L-Glutamine also cleanses the liver of the waste products of fat metabolism, and helps prevent fatty buildup. Other benefits of include regulation of the body’s pH levels, proper cellular hydration, weight loss/fat burning, and many more. The comprehensive health benefits of the L-Glutamine cannot be ignored as a stepping stone to a healthier lifestyle. It gives ant diet a more complete nutritional profile and works in conjunction with many other supplements you may be taking. |
